A transfer pump and a booster pump are the two most confused pieces of equipment in a building's water system. Both raise water, both sit in the pump room, and both are often called simply "the water pump" by building staff. But they do very different jobs, and knowing the difference helps you fix the right thing when supply fails.

What a transfer pump does
Tall buildings in Singapore store their own water rather than drawing everything straight from the mains. Incoming water first collects in a low-level transfer tank (usually in the basement or at Level 1). A transfer pump system then lifts that water up the riser to the roof storage tank. From the roof tank, water flows down to serve the floors by gravity.
The transfer pump only cares about one thing: keeping the roof tank full. It switches on when the roof tank drops and off when it is full, guided by level probes or float switches in both tanks.
What a booster pump does
Gravity from the roof tank is often not enough to give strong pressure to the highest floors, or to buildings without a roof tank. A booster pump system takes water from a tank and holds a constant, pre-set pressure in the supply line to the outlets, so a shower on the top floor feels the same as one on the ground floor.
Instead of watching a tank level, a booster set watches pressure. It speeds up or brings in a second pump as more taps open, and eases off as demand drops.

Which one does your building need?

- Water stored in a roof tank and supply feels weak only on the top floors: you likely need a booster pump for those floors.
- Roof tank keeps running empty or the upper floors lose water entirely: the transfer pump is the part to check.
- Large or tall building: you probably run both, a transfer pump filling the roof tank and a booster set pressurising the higher units.
Can one pump do both jobs?
In practice, no. The two duties use different control logic (tank level versus line pressure) and different pressure settings, so they are almost always separate pump sets, each sized for its own job. Trying to make one pump do both usually leads to short cycling, poor pressure and early failure.
